The number of older Internet users in urban China has increased rapidly in recent years, while the prevalence of Internet usage among older adults is still much smaller than developed countries. Using data from 2018 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey, we find great gender, age, and education differences among the older adults in internet access, internet use, and ways of learning Internet. Older urban netizens use Internet frequently. Most of them use the Internet to socialize or search for information, while a small proportion of them try online shopping. Most of older urban netizens use mobile phones to get online. They learn about Internet use by themselves or asking for help from their family members rather than referring to resources outside household. The Internet use of older adults in urban China is largely affected by their individual attributes, family characteristics, socio-economic status, equipment and technical conditions, and their own interest in using smart devices. Based on these findings, we suggest that, to encourage the Internet use among older adults, producers should enhance the quality and types of services designed for older adults, and the community should play a more important role in promoting the Internet use among older adults.

At present, the intergenerational support of the younger ageing parents in the onlychild families in urban China has the following Characteristics: On the intergenerational economic support, the proportion and quantity of money children giving to their parents exceeds what the elderly parents giving to them. The intergenerational economic support in the only child families is more balanced than in the multiple children families. On the intergenerational support in housework, there is more support in the only child families than in the multiple children families, but again the former is more balanced. In terms of spiritual support, the proportion of the ageing parents of only children feeling closer is higher than that in multiple children families. Between the only sons and the only daughters, there is no significant difference between the economic support and the spiritual support, but the support in housework is significantly different. The intergenerational support of the younger ageing parents in the only child families is mainly influenced by the status of their only child and the intergenerational relationship.

Abstract453)      PDF (282KB)(352)       Save
The proportion of contraceptive use among married migrant women at reproductive age is lower than it in the past and the overall national level.Contrasting to frequent use of long-acting contraceptive methods by the overall women at reproductive age,the married migrant women at reproductive age tend to use short-term contraceptive methods. The long-acting contraceptive methods are dominated by the use of IUDs and sterilizations, while the use of condoms as a short-acting contraceptive method is very popular.Compared to the past, they are currently using fewer IUDs and more condoms.Married migrant women at reproductive age have significant differences in the choice of long-acting or short-acting contraceptive use in terms of age, education level, household registration, mobility, home location, availability of childcare, and children's gender and ethnicity. The choice of contraceptive use is influenced by a combination of their individual, family, and socioeconomic characteristics.

Intention for Old-age Support of the Middle-aged Parents of Only Child in Rural China
Ding Zhihong
Population Research    2014, 38 (4): 101-111.
Abstract1415)      PDF (120KB)(1744)       Save
Changes are taking place in the intention for old-age support of the middle-aged parents of only child in rural China, who are increasingly seeking social support or support by their own rather than family support with a considerable portion having no intention at all. Health status, economic status and social security largely determine the intention for old-age support of the middle-aged parents of only child. The preference for social support over family support is significantly associated with income, education, occupation and social security, while the preference for support by own over family support is significantly related to family size, income, age, education and health status. It is surprising that gender of the only child, land ownership and region do not have significant effects on their intention for old-age support.

Abstract1788)      PDF (132KB)(1344)       Save
The oldest old have a higer demand for care, but their satisfaction with the current care provision is not high.Although the home-based elderly service has been rapidly developed, care support remains to be provided by family members, and the elderly have a low utilization of social services. This study has found that age, health status, economic status and place of residence of the oldest old have significant impact on care satisfaction. These findings suggest that in the process of improving the care satisfaction of the oldest old,the government and society should scientifically plan the home-based care services, provide better support for the oldest old who are in poverty, have poorer cognition and live in empty nest, pay more attention to the construction of the family harmony among generations, accelerate the development of professional social workers, and strengthen international exchanges.
